Further information on the module can be found at BASIS.

After successfully completing the module, students will be able to:

  • Develop, design, and elaborate business ideas in detail.
  • Understand the entrepreneurial mindset and the entrepreneurial process.
  • Transfer a business idea into a business model in a structured and analytical way.
  • Understand how to deal with the opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurial activities.
  • Apply presentation techniques and develop complex solution concepts in teamwork

In this module, we immerse ourselves in the world of founding a business. We examine the characteristics of successful leaders and explore the fundamentals of entrepreneurial thinking and action, giving students the opportunity to develop their own initial business ideas. The central question is: How do you turn a promising idea into a successful business model?

We cover all important aspects of a business model – from corporate strategy to marketing and financing plans. A particular focus is on creating a pitch deck, a concise presentation of the business model for potential investors.

During the program, students can present their ideas, receive valuable feedback, and exchange ideas with experts from the field. Theoretical knowledge is applied directly: In small groups, participants develop a pitch deck and present it to a jury, simulating a pitch competition with investors from the startup scene."

Sarah:

"The practical relevance of this module makes it unique. Prof. Fischer-Kreer enthusiastically supports us students in stepping into the shoes of an entrepreneur. Never before have I been able to gain so much knowledge and experience from a module, not only for my professional future, but also for life!"

Jan-Niklas:

"I really enjoyed the module on business start-ups in the agricultural and food industry because, on the one hand, it was my only practical module in the entire degree program, but on the other hand, it also gave me prospects for after graduation and an insight into the startup scene. This module significantly lowered the hurdle for me to start my own business. After this module, I feel able to set up my own business and know who to turn to if I have any questions. You are also treated as an equal in the module, and that alone is a recommendation in itself! In addition, the module doesn't feel like working towards an exam; instead, you realize that it's actually about knowledge transfer and enrichment. The direction of knowledge transfer is not one-sided. Professor Dr. Denise Fischer-Kreer is an absolutely exceptional lecturer who is open to suggestions, exchange, and productive and appreciative cooperation."

Kubilay:

"Upon a friend's recommendation, I chose the module 'Founding a business in the agricultural and food industry' in my last semester at university. During my entire time at university, there was no other module that taught the curriculum in this way. The creative and interesting structure of the module made it much easier for me to absorb the content taught, whether through recurring group work, guest lectures, presentations of business concepts I had developed myself, or a very interesting excursion. This module also had a special charm due to the rather small number of participants. In my opinion, this meant that the content could be conveyed much more efficiently and questions could be addressed more effectively. In addition, it led to better chemistry between the module participants and created a kind of close-knit, collaborative atmosphere – something I often missed during my time as a student. I can give a very clear recommendation for the course because behind this module is a great team with a lot of passion. I give it a straight 10/10!"

Tristan:

"The course is an absolute enrichment for all those who already have the entrepreneurial spirit in them – and for everyone else, it awakens here at the latest! We were given the most important tools to evaluate and successfully implement our own startup ideas. The events were varied, practice-oriented, and were presented in an engaging way. A clear recommendation!"

This semester, six student teams once again developed innovative startup ideas as part of the 'Founding a business in the agricultural and food industry' module and presented them to a jury. The ideas ranged from sustainable food innovations to health solutions and digital platforms. They included delicious bars made from orange peel, healthy food vending machines for shift workers, nutritional supplements for pregnant women made from organic fruit juice leftovers, a platform for nutritionists, and a concept for preventing back pain through break-time exercise in companies. In the seminar, we tried out new learning methods and approached entrepreneurship through practical exercises and improvisation.

The jury consisted of Annett Herrendörfer from the Founders' Center of Sparkasse KölnBonn, Juliane Kozdras from the Office for Economic Development of the City of Bonn, Anna Villwock and Greta Mittweg-Grapentin from the Transfer Center enaCom of the University of Bonn, as well as Prof. Dr. Denise Fischer-Kreer, Kristin Brennhäußer, Raffael Stefanik, and Moritz Mey from the Chair of Entrepreneurial Behavior.

Another special highlight was the excursion to the urban farming startup Pilzling from Cologne, which offered interesting insights into local entrepreneurial activities. We wish all our students the best of luck and hope that some will one day start their own company."

Summer semester 2024

The 5 student teams presented their ideas to a jury. The concepts presented ranged from food innovations and sustainable packaging to a platform for recreational sports. The ideas included healthy snacks for the campus, a muesli based on the circular economy, new cassava dishes, a plastic-free yogurt cup and an app for joint sports.

The jury consisted of Annett Herrendörfer from the Sparkasse KölnBonn Start-up Center, Anna Müller and Christina Qaim from the EnaCom Transfer Center as well as Prof. Dr. Denise Fischer-Kreer, Kristin Brennhäußer, Raffael Stefanik and Moritz Mey from the Chair of Entrepreneurial Behavior.

We wish the course every success and hope that some of the ideas can be put into practice.
